SVHOA Membership Directory

SVHOA, with the help of our new management company, is planning to create an online membership directory in 2008. Please click on the below form and complete it if you would like your contact information to appear in this searchable online directory.

The directory will be secure and accessible only by SVHOA members. Unique user names and passwords will be used to access this directory. Look for more information in the weeks ahead and at the 2008 AGM, scheduled for February 12th.

Light-a-Luminary Cancelled

Southern Village Neighbors,

We are very sorry to inform you that due to the potential fire hazard resulting from the extreme drought, the organizers have decided to cancel the Light-a-Luminary event this year. This has been a difficult decision, but the members of the organizing committee and the block captains all agree that it is the right thing to do.

As you probably know, several communities have issued a ban on luminaries this year, and other communities have placed restrictions on their use. In addition, the State of North Carolina has issued an outdoor burning ban which forbids any flame beyond 100 feet from an occupied dwelling. While we probably could have obtained a permit from the Town of Chapel Hill to light the candles with certain restrictions, we have decided against it. The issue of lighting luminaries has received a lot of media attention during the past two weeks, and several neighbors have been questioning whether we should proceed. As we thought about it, we realized that lighting 7,200 candles during an extreme drought is simply not a good idea.

Thank you for continuing to support this event. We look forward to better luck next year.

Notice of Street Closings

On Sunday afternoon, December 9th, the fourth annual Southern Village Holiday 5K and 1-Mile Family Fun Run/Walk, presented by Harrington Bank, will begin at 2:00 p.m. The proceeds from this event will benefit the Chapel Hill Service League.

For the safety of the runners and walkers, it will be necessary to restrict traffic on the streets where the race is being run.

Both the one-mile and the 5K runs begin and end at the Market Green. The 5K starts at 2 pm, and the one-mile begins at 3 pm. The streets that are involved are: Greenview to Arlen Park, Parkside Circle, Copperline, Park View Cresent, Highgrove, Hillspring, Westside, Glade, Glenhaven, Graylyn and Aberdeen. We regret any inconvenience it may cause, but we hope that by alerting you in advance, we can minimize any problem.

We also ask that you tie up the family pet that afternoon. Even though your dog may not bite, it would not be a good idea for either man or beast if a dog got in the middle of a pack of 300 runners.

Finally, we ask that you move your cars off of the streets to permit the runners more room in which to run.

The streets will be closed only while the runners are passing and will be opened as soon as the last runner in each race passes. No one section of the course will be closed for more than 30 minutes at any one time. All streets will be open to full traffic no later than 3:30 p.m. If you have any questions, please contact us at sv5k@chapelhillserviceleague.org.

For more information about the race, visit www.sv5k.com.

Playground equipment poll

Southern Village Neighbors,
We are seeking your feedback on the next round of enhancements for Edgewater Playground. Last year we replaced the treated wood play structure, this year we plan to replace the treated wood swing set and add a climbing structure for older children. We are asking the neighborhood to vote on two options for the new climbing structure that meet available space and budget limits. The option with the most votes will be selected and installed during 2008.

Thank you,
Edgewater Playground Committee
