Good Neighbors & Southern Village Trash

Southern Village is full of single family homes, townhomes, condos and businesses.  All of us need to deal with trash and the proper disposal of it.  Please be considerate of others and do not dump your trash where it does not belong.  There are several private dumpsters throughout the village, one at Southern Village Club, another at Edgewater Condos and several near the business district.

These are private dumpsters that are not open for Southern Village residents to dump their trash without permission.  Please know it is against the law to dump your trash in another’s dumpster, such is called a theft of service.  The owners of all the private dumpsters throughout Southern Village thank you in advance for your support.

Southern Village 1st Annual Swim for Smiles

Swim for Smiles Family Triathlon Registration NOW OPEN!

This is an event everyone needs to seriously consider participation!  Designed to be the first-ever FAMILY Triathlon in NC, the Swim for Smiles  Family Triathlon will be held in the beautiful Southern Village neighborhood in Chapel Hill, NC and will accommodate over 200 Relay teams and 150 Individual Entries.

The race will start in the 25-meter pool uniquely situated in the middle of the neighborhood. The race transitions into an 11-mile bike ride through the Chatham County countryside and eventually back into Southern Village via a neighborhood bike path.  You finish the race running on one of the flattest run segments of any triathlon course in North Carolina – along a jogging trail that takes you through the heart of the neighborhood.  The Swim for Smiles Family Triathlon is an open registration event (meaning, it’s designed for all ages to participate – we’re even willing to allow runners to push jogging strollers) that will be USA-Triathlon sanctioned. This is truly a unique event and opportunity for families of all ages to compete together for a great cause (as we’re giving all the money we make to the NC Children’s Hospital – less than 2-miles away from where the race will be held).  And, best of all, the relay teams can be made up of all adults, all kids OR a mixture of kids and adults as we will award prizes for the Top-3 teams in each category in addition to individual kid and adult entry prizes.

The Swim for Smiles Family Triathlon is a Sprint Triathlon distance race with an easy swim, moderate bike course with rolling hills and finishes with an easy to moderate run.

Southern Community Park Dedication

To those of you who love the new Southern Community Park…

The Town of Chapel Hill is planning two events that will allow you to both enjoy and contribute to this important community asset.  Both will take place on Saturday, June 6.

First, the town will be dedicating the park.  The dedication activities will start at 10:00 am on June 6 and conclude around noon.  Festivities will include music, food and a tour.

Second, the town will be sponsoring a volunteer trail building day (rain or shine) at 1:00, also on June 6.  All volunteers should meet at the Dogwood Acres Drive parking lot. We’ll concentrate on building a hiking trail from Dogwood Acres Drive to the greenway trail near Scroggs School.  No special skill necessary.

Trail builders should bring the following if possible:

* Stiff rake (the steel kind, not the flexible type for raking leaves)
* Loppers for cutting branches and small trees/bushes
* Work gloves
* Appropriate clothes and footwear

Some tools will be available (but no extra work gloves).  We’ll schedule another work day in the future to build trails south of Dogwood Acres Drive. So the town can get an idea of numbers, please respond directly to Bill Webster in the town Parks & Rec office or to Doug Heilig, Southern Village resident and Parks & Rec Commission member, to let us know if you can make it and if you can bring a tool.  Contact information is below:
