It’s with sadness that I share the news that Arun Kilara, President of the Southern Village HOA, died recently. Arun served the Southern Village community for many years, first on the Architectural Review Board, then on the Board of Directors and for two years as President of the HOA. Arun’s kindness, even temperament and commitment to serving this community will be greatly missed. We send our condolences to his wife, Karen, and to his family.

Dr. Arun Kilara Obituary (reprinted with permission)

Dr. Arun Kilara, a man of true integrity, passed away on October 14, 2017 at UNC Hospital. Arun was born on July 8, 1949 in Bangalore, India to Dr. Krishnaswamy Kilara Iya and Sharada Naranaiah. He graduated from the Scindia School, and earned his B.Sc. at Punjab University. He continued his education at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Canada where he received his M.Sc. and the University of Nebraska where he completed a PHD in Dairy Science.
Arun joined the faculty at the Pennsylvania State University in 1978. In addition to teaching graduate and undergraduate courses he conducted research in the areas of food proteins, enzymes and dairy foods and conducted outreach/extension programs in continuing education. He also directed the internationally famous Ice Cream Short Course and the Pasteurizer Operators Workshop. He participated in teaching in the Sanitation Workshop, Better Process Control School and Pennsylvania Approved Dairy Laboratory Directors Course. He organized seminars and reengineered production schedules for the University Creamery and chaired a Strategic Planning Committee for the Department of Food Science. He trained 13 PHD students and 35 M.Sc. students. Arun published 120 research papers and contributed to conference proceedings and technical text books.
After leaving Penn State Arun worked for two years as Co-Leader for Director of Protein Applications for Monsanto Company. He spearheaded a new research effort to understand how proteins function in foods.
Arun is survived by his wife, Karen, his three stepchildren: David Sky, Tessie Sabbag and Maggie Sky and seven grandchildren. Surviving also are his brother, Dr. Guru Kilara, and sister, Sandhya Iya, two nieces, a nephew and numerous cousins in India and the United States.
The family is grateful for the love and support of dear friends, Dr. Raghu Ballal and Latha Ballal.
